- 1). Turn off the two water-supply valves under the sink that supply water to the faucet.
- 2). Pry off the center cap on top of the faucet handles that cover the securing screw. Insert a small, flat-head screwdriver in the small notch between the center cap and the top of the faucet to pry off the cap.
- 3). Turn the screw on the inside center of the faucet handles counterclockwise with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Pull the faucet handles off the faucet.
- 4). Rotate the packing nut securing the faucet stem to the faucet counterclockwise with an adjustable wrench. Lift the packing nut away from the faucet. Pull the faucet stem out of the faucet and turn it over so that the bottom of the stem is facing you.
- 5). Remove the brass screw securing the washer to the bottom of the stem with the Phillips-head screwdriver. Pull the washer away from the screw or the bottom of the stem. Inspect the O-ring around the bottom of the stem. If it has cracks, replace it.
- 6). Apply a small film of petroleum jelly on the replacement O-ring with your fingers. Roll the new O-ring over the faucet stem and into the groove for the ring. Ensure that the O-ring has no twists when installing it in the groove.
- 7). Place the replacement washer over the end of the faucet stem. Thread the brass screw into the bottom of the faucet stem until the head of the screw makes contact with the washer. Tighten the screw one full turn with the Phillips-head screwdriver.
- 8). Insert the stem into the faucet and secure it with the packing nut. Turn the packing nut clockwise until it is hand tight. Turn the nut another full turn with an adjustable wrench.
- 9). Place the handles over the top of the stems and secure it with the retaining screws through the top center of the handles. Push the center cap over the top of the faucet handles until they are flush to the top of the handles. Turn on the water supply shut-off valves.
