- 1). Perform a full check on your vehicle. Your car should be in good condition for the drive since you will be traveling over 2,000 miles. Consult a professional mechanic to avoid any potential problems on the road.
- 2). Gather supplies for your trip. You'll need a map or atlas that covers your entire course. A global positioning system (GPS) will be extremely useful if available. Bring food for snacks along the way and money for meal stops.
- 3). Reserve a hotel room if you plan to stop along the way. The drive takes approximately 30 hours total. If you wish to split the drive up, a stop in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma will split the drive up into two 16-hour driving days. If you prefer shorter distances for each day of your trip, try stopping in St. Louis, Missouri and Amarillo, Texas; these stops divide the trip into three 10-hour days.
- 4). Keep watch of your gas tank levels during the latter part of your trip. Plan to make stops whenever possible through the states of Oklahoma and New Mexico, where truck stops and gas stations are scattered more sparsely along the route than towards the beginning of your trip.
- 5). Plan for a few side trips if there are certain sights you'd like to visit. Country music fans can plan for the first leg of their trip to end in Nashville, or veer slightly off the route to visit the Grand Canyon just before reaching your destination. Travelers can catch a Cardinals game at the ballpark in St. Louis or visit the Turquoise Museum in Albuquerque, both of which are right along the route.
- 6). Map out your trip beforehand, especially if you do not have a GPS to guide you along the way. Upon your departure from Cleveland, get on to I-71 South. Eventually, your trip will lead you to I-70 West, followed by I-40 West which will lead you to Phoenix.
