- Azaleas prefer to be planted in places that are cool and receive filtered sunlight. Some azalea species are more sun-tolerant than others, but their flowers last longest when grown in partial shade. However, if you plant your azaleas in full shade, you risk poor growth and no flowers.
- Plant your azaleas in organic, acidic soil -- 4.5 to 6.0 pH. Make sure the soil is well-drained or you put your shrub at risk for root rot and other diseases. Use a 2-3 inch layer of organic mulch to help retain moisture and maintain an even soil temperature.
- The best way to water your azaleas is via soaker hoses or drip irrigation. If you water overhead you increase the chances of disease. Water only when the soil around the base of the azalea feels dry, since these shallow-rooted plants will decline if sitting in excessive moisture.
