- Like South Carolina, Georgia is home to barrier islands that house the state's beaches. On beaches like Tybee Island, Jekyll Island and Cumberland Island, you will find national forts and parks, water activities like parasailing and dolphin tours and plenty of island shops and locally owned restaurants around the downtown areas. Nearby Tybee Island is the rich historic town of Savannah, filled with Southern cuisine, ghost tours and old buildings near the Savannah River.

Along Interstate 75 in south central Georgia are historic towns, lake areas and several state parks. You'll find large cities like Macon and Valdosta, college towns like Milledgeville and Tifton, and other notable towns likes Perry and Fort Valley. Make sure to try some boiled peanuts from a roadside vendor along the way. And check out sites like the Georgia music and sport halls of fame or the Ocmulgee Indian Mounds in Macon, outlet centers in Perry or the South Georgia Motorsports Park above Valdosta. - In central southwest Georgia between interstates 85 and 75 is a region of Georgia centered around rich history. In addition to plenty of antebellum homes and historic districts in the region, some areas also focus on past United States presidents---Jimmy Carter was from Plains, and Franklin Delano Roosevelt popularized the small town of Warm Springs when he sought the area for polio treatment. The Chattahoochee River that runs through Columbus also is a popular site.

Just above the coastal plains along Interstate 16 is an area known as the Midlands. You'll get in touch with nature at many sites and also stumble upon some historic sites. Towns like Dublin, Statesboro, Metter and Cochran feature gardens, state parks and rivers for outdoor adventures and sightseeing. You can also buy sweet onions in Vidalia on your drive. Statesboro, home to Georgia Southern University, boasts a vibrant downtown area with bars, restaurants and shops. - Take to the Flint River and visit the nearby Flint RiverQuarium when you go to Albany.river image by blaine stiger from Fotolia.com
Although much of southwest Georgia doesn't look like much from a map, those who enjoy the simple life will find comfort in the area. Situated between the Alabama and Florida borders, you will find a few gems in this region of Georgia. Albany carries much of the tourism with sites like the Flint RiverQuarium, the Albany Museum of Art and several area lakes, parks and golf clubs. Lake Seminole sits in the southwest corner of the state below Bainbridge.
