Like many of the everyday verbs, estar, one of the verbs most commonly used to mean "to be," is irregular.

The conjugation pattern of estar is shared by no other verb. It is irregular in its present tenses, where the stem is not stressed in the way it is with most verbs, and related imperative forms. The preterite and imperfect subjunctive forms are conjugated using a v somewhat like the way that tener is.

The irregular forms are given below in boldface:

Infinitive (infinitivo): estar

Present indicative (presente del indicativo): yo estoy, tú estás, usted/él/ella está, nosotros/as estamos, vosotros/as estáis, ustedes/ellos/ellas están

Imperfect indicative (imperfecto del indicativo): yo estaba, tú estabas, usted/él/ella estaba, nosotros/as estábamos, vosotros/as estabais, ustedes/ellos/ellas estaban

Preterite (pretérito): yo estuve, tu estuviste, usted/él/ella estuvo, nosotros/as estuvimos, vosotros/as estuvisteis, ustedes/ellos/ellas estuvieron

Conditional (futuro hipotético): yo estaría, tú estarías, usted/él/ella estaría, nosotros/as estaríamos, vosotros/as estaríais, ustedes/ellos/ellas estarían

Future (futuro): yo estaré, tú estarás, usted/él/ella estará, nosotros/as estaremos, vosotros/as estaréis, ustedes/ellos/ellas estarán

Present subjunctive (presente del subjuntivo): que yo esté, que tú estés, que usted/él/ella esté, que nosotros/as estemos, que vosotros/as estéis, que ustedes/ellos/ellas estén

Imperfect subjunctive (imperfecto del subjuntivo): que yo estuviera (estuviase), que tú estuvieras (estuvieses), que usted/él/ella estuviera (estuviese), que nosotros/as estuviéramos (estuviésemos), que vosotros/as estuvierais (estuvieseis), que ustedes/ellos/ellas estuvieran (estuviesen)
