- A Moses basket is a large basket with deep woven sides, handles and an oval middle. Babies sleep in the middle of the basket on a mattress that can be taken out and washed. The basket may be carried around as the baby sleeps.
- A bassinet is a very small bed that is elevated above the floor. The bassinet is often covered with a canopy that can be drawn around the sides of the bed to shield it from view and noise. Bassinets are usually oval shaped.
- A Moses basket is easy to use. The baby can simply be placed in the basket without fuss. No set up is required to put the Moses basket together. Moses baskets are also very portable. A Moses basket can be taken nearly anywhere, such as on a picnic or other outing. Moses baskets are inexpensive to purchase and can be reused for other purposes once the baby has outgrown the basket. You can use it as a normal purse to carry other items inside.
- A bassinet remains off the floor, protecting the baby from drafts and unwanted visitors, such as dogs or other children who may not know how to handle a baby yet. A bassinet may be placed right next to a caregiver's bed, making nighttime feedings easier. Bassinets are often delicately designed and may be passed down as cherished heirlooms. A bassinet typically has netting to protect the baby from insects and help reduce noise that might wake the baby from slumber.
- A Moses basket may not be safe. Moses baskets are typically made of less sturdy material, making it possible for the baby to fall out of the basket when the caregiver isn't looking. Moses baskets cannot be used in cars and a Moses basket can be very heavy to carry when the baby is inside. The baby does not get carried directly so that it can hear the mom's heartbeat or be rocked as she walks.
Bassinets are not large, making them quickly outgrown. A baby cannot be rocked to sleep in the bassinet and the bassinet is not portable. Also, a bassinet is typically more expensive than a Moses basket.
