- If you have a large window or if you want to give your room height and drama, hang curtains from the ceiling to the floor. In doing so, you can emphasize the height of the room and the size of the window and turn it into a focal point. Choose sheer materials to create a soft, romantic look and to make the most of the light without sacrificing privacy; for a regal, traditional curtain, look for heavier materials like brocade.
- When planning curtains and drapes, use fasteners to complement your room design. Instead of the usual curtain ring, look for alternate fasteners that echo design themes. In a traditional room, create a loop and sew on button closures; for a modern room, use office clips for an unexpected look. You can also change up your tiebacks by replacing hooks with decorative pieces, like enamel rings, antique plates or oversize brooches.
- When you are having trouble finding curtains or drapes that work in your room, make your own out of material from a local craft store. For a simple look, find panels of a textured material like linen, and hang them over the curtain rod for a rustic look. You can also hang basic panels on either side of the window for a clean look; fold over the top, and sew to make a tube that can slip over the curtain rod. If you want a more dramatic look, choose contrasting materials and create a double valance; for an unexpected touch, choose materials in different patterns or colors.
- If you want to update your existing curtains and drapes without spending a lot of money, add trim to spice them up. Depending on the style of your home, you might create a traditional design with several rows of lace and a scalloped bottom edge, or choose a simple and modern look with straight rows of ribbon to create stripes. You can also add details along the bottom or top of the curtains with iron-on appliques, cross-stitching or fabric paint stencils.
