- In the small areas of your home, it is easy for moisture to build up over time. This is especially true in crawl spaces, as their overall size and lack of ventilation allows for humidity to gather in the air at a rapid pace. This can lead to mold and the rusting and rotting of any materials in the space. Thankfully, there are a few actions you can take to dehumidify a crawl space and maintain a low-moisture environment.
- Towels can be used to dry any collections of standing water that may be found in the space. It is easiest to clean up what you can by hand, and take further action only to remove the moisture that cannot be seen.
- Place a dehumidifier, an appliance that absorbs water from air, in the crawl-space. They may be found at any home or department store. Many dehumidifiers collect water into a dish that must be emptied when full. Check it regularly to allow further absorption.
- Moisture barriers come in the form of plastic strips that can be cut to size, and secured to key humidity entrance areas. Get a feel for the coldest parts of the crawl space, most often the point where the wall meets the ceiling or floor. Once secured, they prevent excess moisture from entering while the dehumidifier removes all that is currently contained.
