Set up the fish tank. Allow 3 inches of saltwater fish for every 10 gallons of water. The minimum size for a saltwater fish tank is between 40 and 55 gallons. A tank of 75 to 100 gallons would be appropriate for larger saltwater tropical fish like the tang species. Most tropical fish require a water temperature of about 76 degrees Fahrenheit. Adding heaters to the the tank will help maintain the necessary temperature. Lighting must also be selected. Normal output fluorescent lighting will work well with a tank containing only saltwater tropical fish. Metal halides or incandescent lights should be used for saltwater fish tanks which will include coral and reef species. A good filtration system is needed in order to clean the tank. Mechanical filters are best for saltwater fish tanks; these filters remove particles from the water. - 3). Feed saltwater tropical fish twice a day. They can eat flake food, freeze-dried shrimp, clams and the skin of fish. Saltwater tropical fish are either herbivores or carnivores. Herbivores eat small amounts of algae-based food throughout the day. Carnivores sporadically eat large amounts of high protein insect-based flake fish food. Offer the fish a variety to maintain a healthy balance.
