- Anti-virus programs such as Norton, Avast! or AVG Free provide real time monitoring of a computer to detect infections. These programs can block malicious files such as Trojans and viruses from infecting the computer. Additionally, anti-virus software can detect and remove current infections on the host computer.
- Virus and other malware infections can cause a computer to run sluggishly. These infections can create browser pop ups, reset the user's home page or redirect search engine results. Viruses can also open pathways to allow other malware to download onto a user's computer without the user realizing it.
- Users should frequently update the virus definitions on their anti-virus software. Anti-virus software relies on a library of definitions to recognize infections. Because there are new viruses, Trojans and other infections arising on a frequent basis, software with an out-of-date definition library may not be as effective at protecting a computer.
