Rehabilitation programs consist of supervised treatment designed to help people overcome dependency on drugs and alcohol. Of the 23 million Americans that need rehabilitation, only 2 million receive treatment each year, according to Victor Capoccia, Ph.D., director of the New York-based initiative, Closing the Addiction Treatment Gap. For those that do seek help, there are various types of rehab programs to choose from. - Inpatient rehab is an intensive treatment that involves the patient staying in a facility for a period of time, usually two to six weeks. The patient is under the watch of medical professionals during treatment. Patients can enter inpatient rehab voluntarily, while others go based on a court order, resulting from trouble with the law as a result of their drug or alcohol addiction.
- An outpatient rehab program is a service where the patient does not have to stay overnight for treatment. Everyone doesn't need the structure of inpatient rehabilitation, according to Dr. P. Joseph Frawley, a Santa Barbara-based addiction medicine specialist. Outpatient appointments can vary in frequency, from once a month for an hour to every day of the week for several hours, depending on the patient. A doctor or rehabilitation specialist will determine the length and frequency of the treatment program.
- Residential rehab is a program that addresses drug and alcohol addiction in a home or retreat-type location. This setting offers classes and meetings for patients to help them focus on how to live a sober life. Some patients will stay for a couple of months, while others choose to stay for years as they work through their addiction. During the longer-course residential programs, known as halfway houses, patients continue to live a normal lives, going to work and school.
- Addiction boot camps are offered to prisoners to reduce the chance they will use drugs and commit crimes in the future. Parents also send troubled teens to similar programs. The boot camp involves military-style, discipline-building activities. There is a graduation ceremony for those that successfully complete the program.
