A good piece of ham will benefit greatly from cooking it with particular spices. Spices will enhance and intensify the taste of the ham along with adding a particular flavor to the ham. The home will also be filled with a warming aroma whilst it's cooking in the oven. Aromatic, sweet and woody spices particularly compliment ham as this enables to cover the saltiness. - Cloves tend to conjure up memories of special holidays such as Christmas as it is a spice that is commonly used with ham at this time of year. The woody aroma compliments the rich and salty taste of the ham. Cloves can also be used to decorate the ham - a knife can be used to scale the fatty skin of the ham in a criss-cross pattern and then the cloves can be added.

Peppercorns are used to add plenty of heat and spiciness to ham. Peppercorns are from a flowering vine in the Piperaceae family. There are also white peppercorns, but black peppercorns are considered to be spicier. If braising the ham, peppercorns can be added to create a smokey flavor to the ham and leave a bitter bite. - The sweet and tangy flavor of cinnamon goes perfectly with ham. Cinnamon comes from the inner bark of several trees, so it also has a woody taste. The spice will also add a depth to the flavor of the ham as the sweetness will compliment the saltiness of the ham.
