- 1). Cut out any damaged or weak rose stems at both the spring and fall pruning. Remove the stems at the base of the plant or where the stem intersects with a healthy stem.
- 2). Thin out the interior of the rose bush to allow more air circulation. Remove any rubbing or crossed stems, cutting them back to within a quarter-inch of a bud.
- 3). Remove the flowers throughout the summer as the begin to wilt. Cut each flower stem back to the nearest leaf bud or set of leaves. Removing flowers, or deadheading, improves the appearance of the push and also helps encourage further blossoming.
- 4). Cut the entire rose bush back in fall once the bush begins to enter winter dormancy. Prune one-third of the height from each bush and remove any damaged stems completely.
