How to Grill New York Strip Steaks on a Gas Grill

    • 1). Allow the steaks to warm to room temperature for 30 minutes. Do not allow the steaks to sit out longer than two hours, or the risk for food-borne illnesses increases.

    • 2). Prepare the gas grill before handling the steaks. The gas grill needs to preheat in order for the New York strip steaks to cook under indirect heat. Turn all of the gas burners on high and close the lid to the grill. The gas grill will be ready once the temperature is between 400 and 500 degrees F.

    • 3). Create a dry rub for the steaks. Place salt, cayenne pepper and garlic powder in a mixing bowl.

    • 4). Rub the dry seasoning onto the New York strip steaks. Use your hands to rub the seasoning into the steaks by making a circular motion with your fingers. Continue to rub the seasoning into the steaks until both sides are seasoned.

    • 5). Coat both sides of the steaks with olive oil. This prevents them from sticking to the grill.

    • 6). Prepare the grilling grates. Use a grilling brush to remove any dirt and debris from the grates. Before placing the steaks on the gas grill, coat the grill grates with olive oil to ensure that the steaks will not stick.

    • 7). Turn the gas grill down once it reaches the desired temperature. Turn one of the burners completely off, and set the rest of the burners to medium-high.

    • 8). Place the New York strip steaks on the side of the grill that no longer has a heat source. This will allow you to cook the steaks indirectly.

    • 9). Cook the steaks for four minutes before turning them. Sear grill marks into the steaks by placing them directly onto the grill, and turning them 90 degrees after two minutes. Turn the steaks over, and repeat the same process to create additional grill marks.

    • 10

Remove the steaks once they reach your desired taste. Rare steaks cook in about six minutes. The steaks will not appear limp when picked up with tongs once they are finished cooking.

Allow the strip steaks to cool for five to 10 minutes before serving.
