- One of the simplest ways to show a child you care is to spend more quality time with her. This is especially important when you have more than one child, as they tend to feel left out or not as important as a sibling. Give each child your undivided attention and spend quality time with each of them individually. This can be baking cookies, going shopping, seeing a movie or just sitting in the backyard and playing a game.
- Always be supportive and understanding of the wants, needs and desires of children. Be supportive when he discusses his goals and ambitions no matter how frivolous or extraordinary they may seem. Show him you are supportive by bragging about him to friends, displaying his artwork and complimenting his writing skills. Leave room for the occasional slip-up in regards to rules and chores, showing you appreciate the effort and are not striving for perfection.
- Children often feel that adults care about them when they are watched, listened to and paid attention to. Be attentive by listening to her stories and jokes, helping her with school work and projects, watching her when she asks such as in the swimming pool or showing you a new dance she learned. If she wants to discuss her friends or day at school, be very attentive and patient, following with her as she tells her tales.
- Show how much you care about your child by getting more involved with the things he is interested in or doing. Join the school PTA and participate in bake sales or food drives. Volunteer to be a chauffeur on field trips and not only sign him up for community clubs and sports, but go to every game and cheer him on.
