Summer Internship Student Profiles - Washington, DC

Student Name: Christian

School/Major: University of Maryland Eastern Shore/ Social Studies Teaching Education

Internship Placement: Congressional Office of Kendrick Meek (17th District of Florida)

Duties: I am an intern who writes memorandums, organizes media clips such as television stations, radio stations, and newspapers in preparation for political press releases. I attend symposiums, hearings, and briefings for the congressmen.

I review and deliver mail. I do biographies of other political figures for the congressman and I answer the telephone for important calls in the office.

What did you like the most about interning in Washington, DC?

What I enjoyed most about interning in Washington, D.C. was the experience of working on Capitol Hill and being in the midst of public policy and legislation.

What did you like the least?

There was nothing I liked the least!

Did your internship help you make future career plans?

My internship better prepared me to teach American history, American Government and what have you in the future since through this internship I have worked for the U.S. Government.

What recreational activities did you participate in while in Washington?

I attended receptions, I got to deliver items and explore the United States Capitol, the U.S. Senate, the U.S. House of Representatives, and the White House. I went to the top of the U.S. monument. I went to many restaurants and went to a few clubs.

Where did you live? How were the accommodations?

Because I am a native to the Washington, D.C.

metropolitan area, I lived at home in Silver Spring, Maryland (D.C. suburb).

Is there anything else that you would like to share about your experience?

I hope and encourage anyone who is offered this opportunity to take full advantage of it because it not only opens so many doors for you in whatever you want to do, but it also gives you a stronger sense of nationalism.
