- 1). Become familiar with the different styles of columns. Some examples are Greek Doric, Ionic Roman Doric, Corinthian, and Tuscan. Study these styles online and decide which one best fits your décor or event. Depending on the manufacturer, you may choose either a plain or a fluted column shaft, and the type of base and capital you want. Columns have three components: the capital, the shaft and the base.
- 2). Decide on the material. This depends on where you want to use your columns. If you plan to use them in your garden, you'll want materials that withstand the impact of the outdoor environment. Some choices of materials are fiberglass, foam, wood, and cultured marble.
- 3). Choose the width. Columns come in a variety of widths (diameters), so consider the space where they'll end up when deciding on how wide you want them to be. For example, you may want to use a wider column for an especially high ceiling.
- 4). Visit a home improvement store, such as Lowe's. After you get a good idea of what they actually look like, you will make more informed choices in terms of which capitals, shafts and bases you want to use. You can purchase them at the store, or shop online for better prices. There are several decorative column retailers with online stores.
