The desire to write is just about as common as the desire to breath for many people, but actually becoming a real writer is another challenge altogether.
Some people are more naturally gifted than others, but the common denominator among great writers is the ability to be focused, work hard, and create fresh content that engages readers in new ways.
There are many types of writers such as novelists, true story authors, online writers, devotional writers, historical authors, journalists, and various other types of writers.
If you're interested in becoming a writer of any sort, here are a few basics to help you get started.
1.
Just Write.
- Really? Yes, just write.
You may say, for what do I write if I'm not sure how well I write? Well, the old adage 'practice makes perfect' is not altogether wrong.
In order to become a good writer, it takes lots of practice at the craft.
If you have no goal as yet in mind of what you'd like to ultimately accomplish or can accomplish, then the first place to start is with a personal journal.
Write about events in your life and the lives of others.
Explore with developing the true story lines into small story snapshots that are well written, but don't fret over each entry.
Just get in the habit of writing.
2.
Be Disciplined.
- So, now you've started writing a journal but it seems kind of boring to just write about what you had for breakfast and what happened at the post office.
But the point is to be disciplined about your first writing approach.
Write everyday, once a day, and at least one or two paragraghs of descriptive, action writing.
Great writers are disciplined writers and are not able to achieve what many have achieved if they had not been extremely disciplined in their approach to writing every day whether they felt like it or not.
3.
Explore various types of writing.
- If you're not sure what type of writing you're good at, then try some different things.
Try writing a short story of less than 1,500 words.
Write a simple poem.
Develop a true event into a story plot.
You will eventually, if not immediately, hit on what you are naturally the best at and where you find the most motivation in writing.
Then begin to explore further into that particular genre.
4.
Study writing.
- Good writers are forever learning about their art and are constantly fine tuning what they are already doing well.
Beginning writers will benefit even more from pursuing some insight into becoming a good author.
There are many, many workshops, classes, and even degrees for those who want to get better at their craft.
Community organizations, junior colleges, online sources and writers clubs offer many opportunities to advance in the field.
5.
Rub shoulders with other authors.
- If you want extra perspective and analysis, meeting and talking with other aspiring as well as successful writers is very helpful to becoming good at what you love.
Let someone else read your work.
Take helpful criticism well and shore up your weak areas.
6.
Get published.
- After you have begun to develop a bit and understand where your interests are, it's always beneficial to begin submitting something to publishers.
Be encouraged that the first time you are paid for something that you have written, you have officially become a 'professional writer'! So, there's no better time to get started as a writer than right now.
The best simple advice you could hear about how to get started as a writer is to just do it!
