How to Build a Wooden Toy Box or Chest

    • 1). Visit the Craft store: You have two options to begin making this toy box. You can either go to the Craft store or make a box from wood pieces that you already have lying around the house. Just make sure you have some nails or screws so you can put it together.I prefer the craft store because they have large toy boxes already made. The only thing you need to do is decorate it.

    • 2). Pick up some paints: I recommend using acrylic paints, as they dry fast and are very easy to work with. Get any color you would like to use. Choose at least 2 different colors. In case you want to put spots or something on your chest! Maybe you have a certain theme going on, so it is best to match it with the appropriate color. You should also pick up a glaze used to smooth and perfect the paint once you are done. This will protect the box from any scratches or wearing out from time itself. Also, it adds a nice touch!

    • 3). Sand the box: If it isn't already sanded, you need to sand it down to a smooth consistency. This way, your making sure that your kids won't get any splinters or sharp edges they can hurt themselves with. It also makes it easier to apply the glaze.

    • 4). Choose your decorations: While you're visiting the Craft Store, find out what kind of decorations you would like. You can use any types of beads, stickers, glitter, or anything else that you see. Just make sure you have a hot glue gun or super glue. I suggest a glue gun the most because the glue isn't lethal if you get it on your hands or clothing. It is perfectly safe to use. Also, jewelry or fake diamonds would be beautiful if you placed it along the edges of the box - would add a certain style.

    • 5). Names: Another idea for your box is to add your child's name. That way they can pick there's from the rest of the children if you have more than 2 kids. If you are just making a chest for yourself, you can always write your name in cursive along the side. Just take a fine brush pen and write your name. They have the fine brush pens at Michaels or a craft store near you, so be sure to ask.

    • 6). Final Touches: Once all the paint is completely dry, you can go ahead and start adding the glaze to the box. Put it out in the sun, or let it dry in the house for about 5 hours. Now your box is finished!
