How to Sew a Sleep Sack

    • 1
      materials

Assemble your materials in one area.

    • 2
      length and width

I used one of my son's sleepers to get an estimate of the length and width I would need for his sleep sack. I took my yard of fabric and folded it in ½ so that I only had to cut once (one front & one back).

    • 3
      neck opening

Cut the fabric. A simple rectangle will do. You will then fold the fabric in ½ again (length wise) in order to cut out the neck opening. You will cut a ¼ circle on the top closed side of the fabric (when opened it will be a ½ circle in the center top of both front and back pieces of fabric).

    • 4
back & front piece of fabric

Designate which piece of fabric is the front and which piece of fabric is the back. The piece of fabric that you have chosen for the front will need to be cut in ½ lengths wise. Fold the front in ½ lengths wise and cut from the neck opening to the bottom (This is where you will be placing the zipper).

    • 5
      pin the zipper

Take the separating zipper and pin it to the fabric. You want the zipper to start at the bottom and close as it is being zipped up to the neck.

    • 6
The clasp on the left is the regular clasp. The clasp attatched to the sewing machine is the zipper clasp.

Before you sew in the zipper you will want to change the clasp on your sewing machine into the zipper clasp. The zipper clasp will save you from breaking the needle on your sewing machine and/or your zipper. This will also help to keep your stitching in a straight line. Sew in the zipper.
Now you can hem (fold the fabric over onto itself and sew along the edge in order to get a finished look and to avoid fraying if you are using cuddle fabric or flannel. If you are using fleece fabric you can skip this step if you do not want to do the extra work).

      under the zipper

Switch back the clasp from the zipper clasp to the regular clasp. Pin the fabric under the zipper together and sew. Make sure that you are sewing the right side. The side that the zipper clasp is on is the outside. You want all of your stitching to be on one side in order to make the sleep sack look finished.

      pin together

Pin the front and back pieces of fabric together. You need to remember to leave the neck opening open as well as the openings for the arms to go through. Make sure once again that all the stitching is on the same side.

open neck and open arm holes!

Sew the front and back pieces of fabric together.

Turn the sleep sack inside out and try it on your little one to make sure it fits.
