- 1). Measure the width of seam at the base of the concrete wall. If it is larger than 1/4 inch, a foam backer rod will be necessary to support the sealant. If not, proceed without the backer rod and onto the caulking process.
- 2). Select a foam backer rod that is slightly larger than the width of seam, so that it conforms to the space and fills it entirely. Several varieties of backer rods are available at local hardware stores and home improvement centers. Push the rod firmly into the gap, approximately 1/4-inch below the surface of the floor.
- 3). Use a sharp pair of scissors to cut the tip on a cartridge of urethane caulk at a 30-degree angle. Leave an opening that will allow you to dispense a bead of caulk roughly the same size as the gap at the base of the wall.
- 4). Puncture the foil seal within the tip of the cartridge using a stiff wire, then load the tube into a caulking gun. Squeeze the trigger and draw the tip of the gun along the backer rod using a smooth, even motion. Fill the gap until it is flush with the surface of the floor.
- 5). Glide the back of an old spoon over the freshly applied sealant in order to smooth it. Allow the urethane caulk to cure over a 24-hour period.
