- Red Blotch is the primary disease that affects amaryllis. The fungus Stagonospora curtisii attacks amaryllis plants that are shaded from the sun and planted in an area that is frequently watered.
- The symptoms of Red Blotch include red spots on flower stalk and leaves, which elongate and become sunken. The stems are bent at the area of infection.
- The spores of Stagonospora curtisii are located on the bulbs. When new leaves and flower stalks grow upward from the bulbs, they may contract the spores and become infected.
- To prevent the spread of Red Blotch, affected bulbs, plants and seedlings should be destroyed. Fungicides can be applied to the soil to combat fungal growth. Additionally, soaking the bulbs in hot water (104 to 114°F) for 30 minutes can reduce the risk of infection.
- Rhizopus stolonifer and sclerotium rolfsii are fungi that cause bulb rot in amaryllis plants. Amaryllis is also susceptible to root rot caused by Rythium debaryanum.
