A farm truck is defined by the state of Texas, in part, as a truck used "exclusively for the owner's use on such farm or ranch." Such trucks must be registered in Texas as a "farm truck" every year at a cost of 50 percent of the applicable fee of "$25 plus an amount determined according to the vehicle's gross weight and tire equipment," according to Section 502.162 of the Texas Transportation Code. - According to the state of Texas, farm trucks may be used to transport "the owner's poultry, dairy, livestock, livestock products, timber in its natural state and farm products to market or to other points for sale or processing, or for the transportation of laborers from their place of residence, and materials, tools, equipment and supplies, without charge, from the place of purchase or storage to the owner's farm or ranch."
- The farm truck may also be used to transport the owner's family to and from church or school, to the doctor or for "other necessities of the home or family."
- A farmer may not use a registered farm truck "in connection with gainful employment other than farming or ranching" or "use a vehicle with a farm truck license plate to tow a trailer with a "Token Trailer" license plate. Farm trucks may also not be used to transport "livestock to a show or rodeo when not being transported for the purpose of sale."
- The owner of the farm truck must register the vehicle as such with the Texas Department of Transportation and submit the application to the County Tax Assessor-Collector's office. In addition, proof of liability insurance must be provided and any applicable fees paid.
