Have you ever watched an expert builder at work? If you have, you probably noticed they were very efficient and didn't waste a lot of motion.
They get things done in half the time it takes most Do It Yourself carpenters.
How do they do this? Two reasons: 1.
They have practiced their craft for years.
2.
They know the secret to efficient work that I learned from a master builder.
And believe it or not, it is one of the most valuable pieces of advice I've received in all the years of working in construction.
This secret will save you hours of pouring over garden shed drawings or plans for your new workshop wondering what went wrong.
Follow this tip and make your next shed building project a joy.
I liked this guy, he had a really calm way about him, and did beautiful work.
He'd been a builder for years, was well-respected, and it impressed me that he never seemed to be in a hurry but always finished on time or ahead of schedule.
I asked him one day.
"Why is it you are so calm? It looks effortless when you work, how do you do that?" What he told me totally changed the way I work.
And today when people see me work, they say the same thing, it looks effortless.
The old builder took me over to his truck and showed me his cab.
By construction standards, it was spotless and organized.
"Wow, did you just clean it?'" I said.
He chuckled, "No.
" and motioned for me to follow him.
It was the end of the day and we walked over to his job site.
Everyone else had gone home.
"Look around," he said, "what do you see?" His tools were packed for the night, the floor was swept, there was a big barrel for trash and wood chips, and a pad of paper next to his tool box.
"This is so clean, why do you go to all the trouble if it's just going to get messed up again tomorrow?" I asked.
The old builder leaned over and said, "The last half hour of my day goes to clean up.
If you keep your site organized and clean, you'll have more time, you'll think clearer when you are building and you'll be more productive.
" He smiled and added, "Sometimes it takes just a little effort to be effortless.
" I respected him so much I followed his advice the next day and I have never looked back.
It literally transformed the way I work.
So if you want to take the frustration out of your shed building project, prepare like a master builder.
The secret is to set aside the last 1/2 hour of your day to clean up.
Here are the tools I recommend having on hand.
* A 55 gallon trash barrel on-site.
* A rake to clean up wood scraps and saw dust.
* Trash bags * Broom and dustpan * Pad of paper and pencil to write a list of "to do's" for the next day while it is fresh in your mind.
* Work Gloves * Storage box or tarp to cover your tools.
Follow this tip from an old master builder in mind when you start on your shed project.
I guarantee if you follow it faithfully you will be amazed out how much faster and more efficiently you work.
