It was of great importance in the past, as it connected the coast of Konkan to the interior regions of Maharashtra. Historical records show that the earliest of all rulers to control this region were the Devagiri Yadavs. Later, it came under the rule of Tughlaqs and was made the capital of North Konkan region. Gujarat Sultanate had their influence over this place for a certain period till the mid-sixteenth century, when it was annexed by Nizam Shah. The Gujarat Sultans took the region back from Nizam Shah with the help of a Portuguese officer known as Dom Francisco de Menenzes, but they left this region after the attacks from Nizam that ensued later on. Before leaving, they handed over this territory to the Portuguese. It was conquered by Shivaji, the great Maratha ruler, in the late seventeenth century. The Karnala fort was taken over by Aurangzeb, following the death of Shivaji in the year 1680. Rise of Peshwas during the eighteenth century resulted in the recapturing of this fort by the Marathas, but it came under the British East India Company in the early nineteenth century.

The Karnala Fort comprises of two parts, the lower level and the higher level. A basalt pillar, which measures to about 125 feet, can be found at the centre of its higher level. It was earlier used as a watchtower, but most of it lies in ruins today. Visitors to this fort find this pillar very difficult to climb, as it has beehives on it.
