What Dentists and Surgeons Have in Common

People get major operations that leave them looking lifeless while other doctors try to correct their illness. Heart surgeries, transplants and cosmetic surgeries are known in the media as a life-threatening procedure. This makes them fear surgeries. However, people are not particularly threatened when a dentist is going to operate.

When people think of surgery done by dentists, they often think of root canal therapy or just a simple tooth extraction. Most of the procedures they know of are just done within a couple of minutes, and a few hours of rest can take care of recovery. They rarely realize that there are some surgeries that are considered major and require patients to stay in the hospital days after the procedure has been completed.

Maxillofacial surgery is a procedure that dentists do, which corrects problems connected to the oral cavity. Having a dentist do this surgery does not necessarily have to mean that the problem is strictly on the teeth. Maxillofacial surgery includes problems in the head, the face, the neck, the jaw, and the tissues surrounding the oral cavity.

The first step in having a maxillofacial surgery is through an oral and maxillofacial pathology. One of the nine main specialties in the field of Media dental medicine, it is done to focus on diagnosing exactly what the problem is. After diagnosis, proper clinical management or investigation is done to help correct the problem. They consider other factors such as the bones and tissues surrounding the affected area, the salivary glands and other parts that play a major role in trying to correct the problem.

After diagnosing exactly what the problem is, the next step is to go through an oral and maxillofacial radiologist. This is another major part in dentistry where a Media PA dentist creates an image of the infected area to detect exactly where it exists and to properly heal it. This is important because a surgeon cannot simply open up a patient and blindly go through the cavity of a person and try to find the problem from there. The image is used to try and minimize problems in surgery and make it as quick as possible.

Finally after a pathologist and a radiologist gather all information, a Media PA dentist is summoned to start with the surgery. The dentist often fixes problems with the bones that support the mouth, neck and head. He creates structures that strengthen the bone in order for it to regain its purpose.
