It is no secret that sexually transmitted diseases are on the rise, and there are a lot of reasons that are contributing to this. To start, people are getting married older, and no longer waiting until marriage to engage in sexual activity. This is probably the largest broad reason behind the spike and continued increase in STD rates throughout the country. Certain areas such as San Francisco have actually seen larger than average increases. STDs can be prevented through abstinence (the only way to be 100% sure), but there are also other steps you can take to avoid getting infected. Other ways to avoid STDs include using protection, knowing your status, being tested often, and being in a relationship with someone who has also been tested.
There are several myths in regards to sexual contact that has also led to STDs. One of the most common is that you cannot get a STD from oral sex. This is simply not the truth. Another is that birth control pills will mean that you do not need to wear a condom. Although the pill may prevent pregnancy, it certainly will not prevent any potential STDs. Another popular rumors are also false. Having sex in a pool or hot tub will not prevent pregnancy or STDs, as the chlorine or hot water does not kill the necessary €germs€. Keep in mind that herpes can be present even if not visible, so even then you need to be careful. All of these myths are extremely common and often misunderstood. The truth is that all of these things can lead to STDs.
The problem isn't necessarily that people do not know the rules (although this is certainly part of it), but it is also that some people simply may not care anymore. A study was done recently that showed that 19% of 18-30 year olds would sleep with someone who they know has some type of STD. Of these people 39% of them said that they have had unprotected sexual contact with a partner they were had a STD, and were willing to deal with the consequences later. 11% said they simply €always let passion get the better of them'. These findings are certainly at least somewhat shocking, although with the current trends in sexual attitudes and the next generation, this trend may continue.
Fortunately for those who are infected, there are options. There has been an influx of online dating sites specifically for those who are affected with STDs. You can search for singles nearby in a similar situation to you, which makes the dating game much easier for those in that situation.
