- Ornamental grasses work well in different areas of the garden and in different types of gardens. The tall varieties can function as screens, while the short varieties can be used in the place of turf --- in low-traffic areas --- or in rock gardens to fill in empty spaces. Native ornamental grasses also create an effective defense against invasive plants.
- Generally, ornamental grasses require less care and maintenance that many flowering perennial plants. With the variety of plants available, grasses can grow in areas that are wet or dry, and they do well even in poor soils. These practical, aesthetically valuable plants provide low-maintenance alternatives to other, more demanding, specimen plants.
- While ornamental grasses are tolerant of poor soils, compacted soils have to be broken up and amended if the plants are going to develop a root system; all grasses require at least a moderately well-draining soil.
