How to Repair Kenmore Electric Dryers

    Dryer Spins, No Heat

    • 1). Check the fuses near the heating element. Inspect them for breaks inside the fuse. Replace them if necessary.

    • 2). Test the temperature switch with a volt-ohm meter. Set the meter to RX1 and zero it out. Touch the meter probes to each terminal on the switch. The reading should be zero. Next turn the switch on and test it again. Now the reading should show infinity. If the switch fails either test replace it with a new one.

    • 3). Check the heating coil to see if it is bad. Use the volt-ohm meter and touch the probes to each of the heating coil terminals. If it reads zero, the heating coil needs to be replaced.

    Motor Runs, Drum Not Spinning

    • 1). Inspect the belt on the dryer. This is the most likely cause of the problem. Make sure it is not broken or has come off the motor pulley.

    • 2). Check the motor pulley and the idler pulley to make sure they are still in good working order. The idler pulley is what puts tension on the belt. If it is worn out the belt will not function properly.

    • 3). Inspect the drum rollers underneath the tumbler drum. They may have become worn and need to be replaced. Simply remove the drum and access the clips that hold the rollers in place.

    Dryer Feels Too Hot

    • 1). Inspect the dryer vents. Remove the duct work from the back of the dryer and clean the dryer exhaust and the duct work. Also clean the outside vent. Clogged dryer vents will not allow heat and moisture to be expelled from the dryer.

    • 2). Test the thermostat with the volt-ohm meter. Remove the leads from one of the outside terminals and touch probes from the meter on the other two. Any reading other than zero indicates a bad thermostat.

    • 3). Check the heating coil as described above. A heating coil can burn hotter right before it goes out.
