Side Effects of Pain Meds

    Tylenol

    • One of the world's most popular over the counter pain medications is Tylenol. The main ingredient in Tylenol is acetaminophen. This can be taken for minor aches and pains such as headaches, muscle aches and arthritis. When taken as directed, there are normally no side effects associated with its use. Acetaminophen has the potential to cause kidney and liver damage when taken in amounts higher than are recommended on the label. There have been several cases where people have died from taking excessive amounts of Tylenol.

    Ibuprofen

    • Another commonly used over the counter medication is known as ibuprofen. Ibuprofen is generally taken to reduce swelling in various parts of the body. Swelling often occurs as a result of inflammation in the joints or muscles. The most common side effects of using ibuprofen are dizziness, headaches, nausea and rash. People that have asthma or kidney problems should not take this medication because it can cause allergic reactions. You should also avoid this medication if you are allergic to aspirin.

    Hydrocodone

    • Hydrocodone is a drug that is given to relieve severe pain. Hydrocodone is also called by the name Vicodin. This pain relieving drug is a narcotic, and must be prescribed by your physician. Most people tolerate Vicodin very well, but there are some that may experience minor to more severe side effects. Minor side effects include nausea, vomiting, extreme fatigue and being light headed. More serious side effects include having trouble breathing, severe stomach pain and problems breathing or swallowing. There are many other potential effects, but these are the most serious. If you eat prior to taking this medication, you will reduce the risk of nausea and vomiting. You should see your doctor right away if you can't breathe while taking this medicine, or if any symptoms you are experiencing worsen.

    Demerol

    • Demerol is an opiate drug. It is a pain reliever that makes the body relax, and also induces sleep. There are many side effects that can be experienced with the use of Demerol. This is why it is no longer a commonly prescribed medication. The only time that this medication is administered is during labor and delivery, before surgery, or as an anesthetic. The side effects that most people experience are upset stomach, vomiting, being light headed, cotton mouth and being weak. There are other side effects that can be serious such as hallucinating, nervousness, heart rate changes and feeling faint. This pain reliever has the potential to be life threatening. Misuse can cause your respiratory system to slow down enough to stop your heart.

    Morphine

    • A common pain relief medication that is typically used in hospitals after surgery is called Morphine. This drug is also used for terminal patients. Morphine relieves severe pain and anxiety, breathing problems and can be used as an anesthetic. It comes in the form of pills or injection. There are many side effects that can occur while taking this medication, and they are different for each individual. Some of the more serious effects are having trouble breathing, your throat swelling, your breathing becomes labored and you become abnormally fatigued. If you experience any side effects, check with your doctor and he will be able to tell you whether or not you are having an allergic reaction. With any of these pain medications, you should always check with your doctor if you feel different or abnormal. Everyone will not experience the same side effects, if any at all, and there is no way to tell whether or not you will experience them. Report any unusual changes to your doctor, and he will treat you accordingly.
