- A neatly groomed waitress presents a cleaner, healthier impression to the customer and reflects positively on the restaurant's image. A waitress's hair should be washed regularly and neatly kept. A shower before coming in for a shift is necessary. While wearing makeup is optional, it gives a more polished and professional look. Clean hands are crucial at all times. Wash them regularly and after touching contaminated surfaces.
When applying, be ready to interview on the spot. Come neatly groomed and clean to make a good first impression. - This skill is not easy to demonstrate in an interview, but it is an important quality to possess when working in a table service environment. A sharp memory not only makes the waitress's job easier, it also builds a loyal customer base. Waitresses often have more than two tables to tend. Confusing tables or guest orders makes her less efficient. An efficient waitress is more likely to earn better tips and provide better customer service to her guests. Remembering a customer's name and personal preferences creates a measure of personal hospitality. (See Reference 1.)
- Waiting tables is a physically demanding job and requires a great deal of energy. Waitresses are on their feet for the entire shift. While carrying food and walking for extended periods of time can be tiring, a waitress must also maintain a friendly and engaging connection with her guests. During busy times, she may not stop for a couple of hours.
In an interview, mention perseverance and the ability to keep a positive attitude through tiring situations. - "Restaurants rely on good food and customer service to retain loyal customers and succeed in a competitive industry," states the BLS. (See Reference 1.) A waitress provides the majority of a diner's customer service. Promptly fixing incorrect orders, maintaining drink levels, anticipating guest needs and promoting hospitality are examples of basic customer service skills. Anticipating guest needs ranges from conversation levels to providing appropriate condiments without verbal input from her guests. A friendly, genuine smile is a welcome addition to basic customer service skills.
During the interview process, highlight an attention to detail and a commitment to hospitality.
