Garden Wasps

    Types

    • Several types of wasp might be found in your garden. Paper wasps, also known as umbrella wasps, are found in the garden as are their more aggressive relatives, the yellow jackets. Braconid wasps are very small insects that do not have a sting.

    Advantages

    • Like bees, wasps are drawn to the nectar found in flowers. They sip the nectar and carry the pollen from flowers to flower, helping the plants become fertile. They also are predatory, as they devour a wide array of garden pests, including flies, sawflies, leaf miners and aphids.

    Warnings

    • Though they are helpful, garden wasps can still deliver a painful sting. Cover up food, drinks and trash cans when eating outdoors. If you are removing a wasp nest, do it at night as the wasps will be more sluggish and less inclined to sting.
