- 1). Read over the standard for your breed of choice. While horses all have the same basic structure, each breed is evaluated on different features and qualities. Regardless of breed, a halter horse should have a short back, long underline, strong legs and structurally correct hooves.

- 7). Ask the breeder if she plans to show the horse in halter. If she does, attend a show with her to see how the horse does in actual competition. Discuss purchase price and arrangements once you have decided on a prospect.
- 8). Complete any required contracts or paperwork that the seller has to finish the purchase of your halter horse prospect. Follow up with your vet upon purchase to ensure that there are no blemishes or flaws.
