- Country kitchens have a warm and welcoming feel with light and bright colors, fabrics such as small florals, ginghams and plaids and white beadboard wainscoting. Accessorize with handmade and homespun items and flea-market treasures, especially those featuring roosters and fruits.
- Contemporary kitchens are minimalist, modern, stylized and geometric. Most contemporary kitchens have bold horizontal lines, asymmetry and very little ornamentation. When creating a contemporary kitchen, lean toward man-made materials such as stainless steel, glass, chrome and laminate.
- Rustic kitchen decor can be classified as lodge or log-cabin-style. Rustic kitchens typically have a lot of wood -- commonly hickory, knotty pine and alder. Wood paneling and ceiling beams underscore the look. Coordinate the look with rich tones such as reds, greens and earth colors, with splashes of yellow. Red flannel in curtains adds texture.
- Traditional kitchens typically are detailed and elegant. Look for crown molding, fluting and intricate trim. Combine deep, rich woods such as cherry, walnut and mahogany with natural tile and antique fixtures and modern stainless-steel appliances.
