How to Use a Chicago Chainsaw Sharpener

    • 1). Loosen the bar tensioner screw with the screwdriver to remove tension from the chain. Turn the screw counterclockwise until the chain goes slack underneath the guide bar. Remove the bar nuts with the wrench. Take off the bar cover, the bar and the chain. Separate the chain from the bar.

    • 2). Install the Chicago chainsaw sharpener on a flat bench. Check the chain’s box or packaging for the correct depth gauge, angle and stone wheel required.

    • 3). Mount the proper sharpening wheel on the center drive, following the manufacturer’s installation guidelines. Tighten the bolt until the wheel is secured to the body.

    • 4). Release the clamp lever and open the sharpener’s clamp. Place the dull chain, with the teeth up, in between the clamp’s arms on the black guide. Tighten the bolt by turning the lever and lock the chain in place to the free-moving guide. Let the chain hang slack beneath the clamp.

    • 5). Adjust the filing angle of the chain. Turn the wheel underneath the chain guide to your desired sharpening angle, according to the specifications of the chain manufacturer.

    • 6). Bring the grinding wheel down on the first tooth. Check the filing depth. Set the depth by adjusting the left hand knob according to the chain manufacturer’s specifications.

    • 7). Turn on the grinder and sharpen the first tooth. Apply one- to two-second touches to the tooth at first. Turn the grinder off and check the first tooth to make sure that the angle and the depth are correct.

    • 8). Make any necessary adjustments to the settings and proceed to the next tooth. Continue sharpening one side. When finished, turn the chain around repeat the same process for the other side.
