- 1). Open the dishwasher door when it is not in use and remove the bottom rack by pulling it straight out of the main dishwasher body.
- 2). Inspect the area on the dishwasher's floor and look for a plastic or rubber item that has fallen by the heating element. Remove the item, if you find one.
- 3). Remove the access panel on the dishwasher's floor using a Phillips screwdriver. This will provide you with full access to the heating element. Look for any plastic or rubber item anywhere around the heating element.
- 4). Inspect the heating element for bumps or protrusions. This may be a sign that something has melted onto the heating element, which is normally smooth. Rub the heating element with 150-grit sand paper to remove unevenness or bumps. Replace the access panel and lower rack and test the dishwasher. If the burning smell persists, call a service technician because the heating element may be failing and must be replaced.
