How to Use Beadboard as a Kitchen Backsplash

    • 1). Measure the wall space between your countertops and the wall cupboards where you want the beadboard to go. The beadboard will look best when it fits from the countertop rim to the base of the cupboards. Measure both vertically and horizontally so that you get an accurate measurement for a precise fit.

    • 2). Purchase the amount of beadboard that you will need to fill the space that you have. Beadboard comes in large 4 feet by 8 feet hardboard sheets or in solid wood strips of varying lengths. If you are staining your beadboard, purchase the solid wood strips. Hardboard is less expensive than the solid wood strips and is ideal when you are going to paint the beadboard. If you prefer, you can purchase the solid wood strips and paint them as well.

    • 3). Stain or paint the beadboard your desired color. Because you are using this beadboard as a backsplash, it is important to put a polyurethane topcoat over whatever finish you choose. This will help protect the finish from splatters of food and liquids and will make for easier cleaning.

    • 4). Cut the beadboard to the measurements that you took earlier for the backsplash, and install it on the wall. It is best to use a nail gun to put the beadboard up, so that you don't see large nail or screw holes. Shoot the nails in between the grooves of the beads where they will remain unseen.
