DIY: Loft Playroom

    • 1). Designate the wall next to the loft railing as the "art" wall. Divide the wall in half with a pencil and a yardstick. Pour some chalkboard paint into a roller tray and roll your roller into the paint. Blot the roller on the upper part of the tray. Roll the paint in smooth, vertical swaths to cover one half of the wall.

    • 2). Paint the other half of the wall with whiteboard paint. Roll the paint onto the wall as you did for the chalkboard side. Allow the walls to dry for about 24 hours.

    • 3). Let your child help you paint a set of low bookshelves and a miniature table and chairs. Prime them first with white primer and then paint them your child's favorite colors. The furniture may be all one color or each piece may be a different color. You can also put hand prints, footprints or simple designs on the pieces. Allow them to dry for 24 hours.

    • 4). Create storage bins for your bookshelves. Paint a few sturdy, square cardboard boxes with decoupage glue, inside and out. Smooth and press colorful fabric into the glue (you and your child can choose it together). Cover the outside of the fabric with a second coating of glue. Allow the glue to dry for 24 hours.

    • 5). Place label stickers on all boxes so your child knows which toys go where. If your child can't read yet, draw a little picture on each label next to the word. For instance, draw a block tower on the block label or a truck on the toy cars label.

    • 6). Put markers and chalk in clear plastic bins so your child can use them and put them away easily. Set this bin in the corner of the art wall. Place the bookshelves on the adjacent wall and fill them with the cardboard bins and your child's toys and books.

    • 7). Spread an area rug on the floor that matches the colors and designs you picked for the room. Place the table and chairs on top of the rug and give your child space to play.
