- 1). Find plans that suit the style of retreat you like. Several types are available online for free to download. Make modifications with help from a contractor or architect. This could include altering room size, adding a deck and modifying the plans to fit the site.
- 2). Buy the timber. Milled logs are manufactured in all sizes and styles. Flat-face logs and curved timbers have both dove tail and regular log cabin notches. Enlist the help of a contractor or architect to figure out how many the home will need, then order them from a milling company.
- 3). Have the logs shipped to the home site. Make sure the supplier includes everything you need to build the home, including the adhesive, windows, doors and roofing materials. If not, you will have to go through a contractor to get these items, or order them from a home building supply store. Contractors can usually get them at a discount price.
- 4). Contract a builder who has log cabin building experience. Assembling a kit log cabin retreat is not complicated in and of itself, but it does require a lot of labor and know-how and time.
