GIMP is a free, open source graphics tool that's much like Photoshop.
GIMP, GNU Image Manipulation Program, despite every upgrade getting better and better still hasn't become more mainstream as other editors like Photoshop still dominate the market.
There are some reasons that are holding it back at the moment.
Free Connotation For one reason or the other there is a negative connotation when something is free.
It is seen as valueless since it is free.
Many expect to pay hundreds of dollars for something because there is value there so the opposite makes them shy away from free.
Second Best Connotation Many see programs like the GIMP second best to Photoshop.
They don't want to use any less than the industry standard.
If anyone tries to suggest using a free, open source editor like the GIMP, it's seen as telling them to use something that is not as good as something else.
Piracy Regardless of the efforts to stop software piracy, there are still thousands of places to get illegal copies of program like Photoshop.
The problem is that if there is such easy access to this program for many, the concept of a free, open source software isn't as appealing.
Ethically one would hope that it wouldn't be this way but it is.
No Marketing Most open source projects do not have marketing budgets to get their products out there.
Most people are not aware that there are alternatives to popular programs that can legally be downloaded and used for free.
