How to Clean Stainless Steel

I have lots of people call and ask me how to clean stainless steel.
My answer is that it is not that difficult.
However, before I can tell them how to clean it, I ask this basic question; is it a food prep surface? Assuming the stainless steel is in good condition and simply needs cleaning and not restoring the following procedures will keep your stainless steel in great shape and looking good.
Once I know the answers to the question, I can then tell them how to clean stainless steel.
First I will cover it as though it is a food prep surface or in a food service area.
I suggest using a citrus-based degreaser that is safe and approved for food service.
You can find these at janitorial or restaurant supply companies or online.
First, remove the grease build up caused from kitchen grease, foods and fats with your degreaser according to the directions on the label.
Once this has been done there are liquid or aerosols that will clean the degreaser off and polish your stainless steel.
I prefer the aerosols, as they are easier to use.
With the stainless steel cleaner, use a circular motion then a finish wipe in the direction of the polish lines.
The final step for cleaning stainless steel in a food prep area is to use a food service approved sanitizer wiping or spraying on all surfaces that come in contact with food.
This will insure that the surface is free of any agents that are not suitable for human consumption.
For cleaning stainless steel that is not in a food service area the process is the same except the products do not have to be regulated as do those used in such areas.
Cleaning stainless steel is not a hard task and as you can see from this procedure, it is rather easy to maintain a clean and shinny surface.
As with any cleaning chemicals, you should be sure to follow the directions of each product listed on the label to insure proper cleaning.
These tips are based on my experience of over five years in the cleaning service supply industry.
Though there may be other methods, I have found this to give the best results.
Now you know how to clean stainless steel.
