How to Build a Grill Stand Using Concrete Blocks

    • 1). Dig out the area where you want to build the grill stand to about half the depth of a concrete block, and around 10 inches or so wider than you want the actual stand to be. Level the dug-out area, then fill it with concrete blocks to create a base.

    • 2). Mix surface-bonding cement in a bucket or wheelbarrow according to the mixing instructions of the cement.

    • 3). Spread a 1/2-inch-thick layer over the base with a trowel, covering all the concrete blocks that are exposed. Leave the cement to cure for the time indicated by the cement manufacturers, typically between 1 to 3 days.

    • 4). Set a single row of concrete blocks on top of the base in a square “U” shape, which will be the three sides of the grill stand.

    • 5). Continue laying concrete blocks on the walls, with every second row of blocks positioned so the holes in the blocks are exposed at the sides. Build the walls to around 35 to 40 inches high.

    • 6). Mix another batch of the surface bonding cement and smooth over a 1/2-inch-thick layer over the walls of the grill stand, ensuring the holes in the blocks are left open. Feather out the cement at the bottom of the walls to blend it into the base. Leave to cure.

    • 7). Insert threaded rods through the holes in the concrete blocks at the height you want the grill rack and coal plate to go. Place the rack and plate over the rods. Change the height of the rack or plate by placing the threaded rods in the holes of blocks higher or lower.
