The school picks the applicants that stand out from the rest on all of these fronts as academic scholarship winners. Because each pool of applicants is different, the characteristics of the scholarship winners are different year in and year out.
- Spelman's Presidential Scholarship is the school's most generous academic award. Winners receive tuition, housing and fees for four years of college, provided they continue to meet the scholarship criteria throughout their college career. There are approximately five Presidential Scholarships awarded per year. Criteria include academic success in high school, proven leadership ability and community involvement.
- Approximately 65 incoming freshman are awarded the Dean's Scholarship each year. These scholarships are based on high school academic achievement. As of 2010 awards can be as little as $50 and as much as complete tuition for a year. The Dean's Scholarship may be renewed throughout the student's studies at Spelman provided they meet the academic criteria.
