- 1). Tighten the screws on each of the door's hinges with the screwdriver, and then open the door. If it still doesn't stay open, tap the hinge pins down with a hammer. If the door still tries to close by itself, you will need to take it off the hinges to fix the problem.
- 2). Lift up on the door while it is open and insert as many magazines underneath it as it takes for the main weight of the door to be taken off the hinges. Once the weight is off the hinges, take out the hinge pins, starting with the bottom and working your way up, by sliding them up and out. If they don't come out easily, position a nail at the bottom of each pin and tap it out with your hammer. The door will pull away once the last pin is out; place it somewhere out of the way.
- 3). Unscrew the top or bottom hinge plate from the door frame. (A door that won't stay open indicates that the top hinge is in too deep, or that the bottom hinge is out too far.) If you take out the top hinge, place a shim underneath the hinge before you screw it back into the door frame. If you take out the bottom hinge, use a chisel to deepen the area where the hinge plate goes, and then screw it back in. Depending on the severity of your door's unevenness, you may need to chisel more or less or use a larger or smaller shim.
- 4). Place your door back into position and put the pins back in, starting at the top and working your way down. Test your door by opening it. If it still closes by itself, go back and repeat Step 3 until the door rests evenly in the door frame.
