Anyone who can pass air through their vocal chords can sing.
My roommate can sing.
He sings in the shower.
Aretha Franklin can sing.
She sings at The Hanover Theater in MA.
The difference is pretty obvious.
Aretha Franklin is an epic singer while my roommate sings for fun.
Aretha Franklin has a natural talent to belt out a powerful voice that can melt the audience's faces.
This is because she has such intensity in her voice.
Learning how to sing with intensity can be done.
In any type of music, there comes a time when you want to belt out a more bold and powerful voice.
The trick is to get that power without having to squeeze your neck.
If you squeeze your neck and you have that tension, you won't be able to do it consistently night after night.
The key focus here is the voice.
This is a classical training method used in the days when people had no microphones.
Before the invention of microphones, a singer's voice had to carry throughout audience.
This took a lot of emphasis on tone and resonance.
Basically, the throat needs to relax.
The best way in accomplishing that is to get the tongue out of the way.
The base of the tongue is the cause of most of the problems in singers the root of the tongue lies right above the vocal folds which creates a lot of issues.
This classical exercise will help you get your tongue out of the way and help you open up your voice.
You must note that volume is not always about pushing out a sound.
It's about focusing the tone.
A clear and crisp tone carries so much better than a pushed airy tone.
This exercise is the "NG" tongue position exercise.
We want to start by saying the word "Sing," and sustain the ending.
Note that the top of your tongue goes behind the bottom of your front teeth, and the middle of the tongue is gently arching.
Now remove the first two letters and say "NG.
" Alternate between the NG sound and the AH sound as shown in the video.
You don't want to be moving your jaw at all and you don't want to have your tongue collapsing either.
Try it out with different vowel sounds as well.
Relax your shoulders, sit up straight and sing.
If you keep working on this exercise, your tongue will automatically do this when you want to belt out some boldness.
