- Keep plastic produce bags accessible with a flexible, fabric tube that holds them within reach. This project requires a piece of fabric approximately 15 by 24 inches. Check the remnant table in a fabric store or purchase quilting fabric that matches the kitchen décor. Add elastic casing to the top and bottom of the tube and a ribbon or string loop for hanging. Stitch the side seam and turn it right side out. Hang it up and fill it with plastic bags. Simply tug one out from the bottom whenever you need one.
- With remnants or leftover quilt scraps, piece together a one-of-a-kind mat. Stitch remnants together as horizontal or vertical stripes, squares or in varying sizes for the top. Use a solid color for the back facing and then attach a non-slip rug pad to the back. Insert some quilt padding and a sheet of ship board (thin cardboard) to give the mat some stiffness.
- Stitch up a quick remedy for rounding up kitchen dish towels. Sew button holes in a corner of each towel or sew a loop of ribbon to the corner of each towel. Install attractive hooks next to the sink and the stove, and you will have a handy way to keep your dish towels within reach and off the countertops.
- Add a festive look to the kitchen by sewing kitchen towels for all the holidays including the Fourth of July, Halloween and Valentine's Day. Fabric stores are filled with printed craft fabrics that represent each holiday. Purchase a set of white or solid color cotton dish or tea towels. Find the appropriate holiday fabric. Cut fabric to the same size as the dish towels, place face down on the dish towel and stitch 3 1/2 sides together. Turn inside out, fold the remaining open ends inside, press with an iron and then stitch them closed. Sew on a loop for easy hanging and decorate the loop with bells, plastic hearts, pumpkins or other holiday items.
