How to Convert a Metric Dial Indicator to a Standard Dial Indicator

    • 1). Calculate the circumference of your dial indicator from the outer rims of the bezel.

    • 2). Draw a line, using a ruler, the length of the circumference on a sheet of paper. Turn that line into a rectangle with a width of 3/4 inch. Add a lip on the end of the rectangle that is the same width as the rectangle and 1/4 inch long. The lip of the rectangle should be separated from the rectangle itself by a line.

    • 3). Cut out the rectangle and the lip as one object.

    • 4). Wrap the rectangle in a hoop and glue the lip to the adjoining edge of the rectangle.

    • 5). Fit the hoop around the bezel of the dial indicator. Only a portion of the hoop will fit around because it will be blocked by the plunger or other impediments.

    • 6). Mark the inside surface of the hoop with lines that correspond to the lines of the scale in your dial indicator.

    • 7). Choose a line on the hoop to become the "0" point. Then, working clockwise around the hoop, convert each line to standard according to the amount in metric on the scale of the dial indicator. For example, if the scale on the dial indicator is marked in increments of .05 mm, the scale of your hoop will be marked in increments of .00197 in. For conversions you can use a calculator, remembering that 1 mm equals .0394 in., multiplying every metric mark, therefore, by .0394, or you could use an online metric-to-standard converter.

    • 8). Add or remove the hoop to your dial indicator for easy transitions between metric and standard. Always match the "0" of the hoop with the "0" of the dial indicator scale.
