- 1). Set a large plastic tub in a sunny area. Center a brick inside it and place a glass jar on top of the brick. Make sure the rim of the jar sits at least 3 inches lower than the rim of the plastic tub. The jar's bottom should also be centered on the brick.
- 2). Pour dirty water into the bottom of the plastic tub. At most, the water should just hit the top edge of your brick. The brick should not be submerged, nor should the water touch the bottom of your jar.
- 3). Cover the tub with plastic wrap, pulling the wrap almost taut. Stretch a large rubber band over the lip of the tub, holding the wrap in place. Set a rock in the center of the wrap directly over the mouth of your jar.
- 4). Check on the still after an hour or two. The water should evaporate and condense on the underside of the plastic wrap. Gravity pulls the water droplets down to the point just below the rock where the water drips into the jar. When all the water has dripped into the jar, it should be clean and clear, and there should be a grimy coating on the bottom of your tub.
