- 1). Determine the style of texture on the drywall surrounding the area to be repaired. Swirls or other similar patterns are made with a drywall trowel. Star burst patterns are made with a texture brush, which is purchased from a hardware or home improvement store. A popcorn texture is made by adding aggregate to the joint compound before application. Texture aggregate is purchased at most home improvement stores.
- 2). Lay plastic drop cloths on the floor and any furniture or fixtures in the room to protect them from flying joint compound.
- 3). Prepare the joint compound for application. Add water to the joint compound and stir it with an electric drill with a stirring bit installed if the texture is to be applied with a texture brush or drywall trowel. Add the aggregate to the joint compound and stir it with the drill if a popcorn texture is being applied.
- 4). Dip the trowel or texture brush in the joint compound and create the texture pattern you see on the rest of the surface. The trowel is swiped across the surface in semi-circles to make a swirling pattern. The texture brush is pressed against the surface and twisted slightly to create a starburst pattern. Aggregate is rolled on with a paint roller to create a popcorn texture. It may take several attempts to match the pattern; the joint compound can be smoothed between attempts.
