According to Hindu mythology, the five elements of the universe are sky (Akash), water (Paani), wind (Vayu), fire (Agni) and earth (Prithvi). The human body is also made up of these five elements. Vastu Shastra is the science that governs the relationship between the elements of the universe with the five elements of human body. It helps us in designing our home/office spaces so that there is a perfect harmony between the universe and human body. The table below lists the directional consideration where each element should be placed in a home.

Vastu says that our bodys alignment with the universe ensures peace and health which leads to prosperity in a home.

Water: Water is the most important element of vastu as it is linked to our senses of taste, touch, sight and hearing. More than 80% of our body and two-third of earths surface is water. According to vastu water should be drained out in North - East.

Fire: Fire is the soul of the universe. Sun is the most important source of energy and light. The direction of Fire is South-East. The Kitchen, fireplace, geysers etc. should be placed in this direction.

Space: Space refers to planet and stars. Traditional houses in India still have open space at the centre so that light can enter from the centre of the house as well. Cross-ventilated, airy and lighted home provides growth and progress.

Air: Air is the fundamental element for our survival and it is for human beings and plants to breathe. According to vastu, air should enter the house from North-East. Also all the cooling and air supply systems such as air con, coolers, windows, in the house should be installed in the North-East.

Earth: The Earth has gravitational and magnetic force. Earth is the most influential element linked to all five senses of taste, sound, touch, smell and sight. Sleeping with the head towards the south enables one to go with the nature and draw maximum positive energies from the cosmos, to keep fit and healthy.
